This page illustrates the devastating affect electrical dangers have on our community. The author believes that education will change the future. This reading is vital for the reader to understand the need to be electrically safe.
In November of 2015 (not in Queensland) a 5-year-old boy lost his life to the Electric Silent Killer as an electrical fault reached the oven handle which he was gripping onto. This incident was reported to the author and this death was part of the turning point from changing from an electrician to an author and leader in electrical safety for the community. Also, in response to this incident the Queensland Government produced in June of 2016 a short video with the message - one safety switch may not be enough. Unfortunately, as discovered by the author's inspection of over 10,000 homes, the message didn't filter into people's education and understanding. Mainly because most people believe their one safety switch protects all circuits. However, once again, this is not the case. All homes built prior to June 2018 in Queensland homes didn't mandate a safety switch on the oven, this means the Electric Silent Killer can appear. We have a solution to prevent this death danger.
In 2012 a 12-year-old girl was walking back from school as she approached the outside tap of her home to have drink. What she couldn't hear, smell or see was the Electric Silent Killer was exposed on the tap. What differs her story from the oven handle is that she was able to let go of the tap as she began to receive a serious electric shock. However, the time on the tap exposed to the electric current entering her young body was too long and she received permanent brain damage. Unfortunately, shocks on taps are very common, the problem is that they can go from a tingle to fully exposing the true potential of harm to the community from the Electric Silent Killer.
We have a solution to prevent this death danger.
In 2002 a toddler was playing in the house (Housing Commision Government home) as her parents were outside in the garden. The toddler placed her hand behind a broken wall and grabbed the damaged cable. It didn't take long for the Electric Silent Killer to take her life.
In response to this tragic death, the government mandated safety switches on all circuits on all Queensland Housing Commission homes. Why not all homes? Don't we all deserve to live in electrically safe homes. The answer is yes, we all deserve not to be confronted by the Electric Silent Killer. However, for a change to occur we need to be educated so we can demand action from our government. This is the key, education and a demand from the Queensland community for a safe electrical state.
We have a solution to prevent this danger and make the change in law needed to create electrical safety a reality.
In 2023 Queensland was noted as the most electrically unsafe state in Australia based on the death toll. Six people sadly lost their lives from exposure to the Electric Silent Killer. In 2022 Queenslanders reported over 2,300 electrical shocks.
Safe electrical installations preventing electrical harm is achieved with a combination of factors. However, to prevent death from a live metal fitting, a safety switch must be present. The need to have safety switches on all circuits is not law in Queensland for houses built and circuits installed prior to June 2018. This leaves our community at risk.
Safety switches play a vital role in protecting us against electric shocks. Your home was built during a specific legislation ruling depending on the year of build in relation to the safety switch requirement.
These are the requirement dates:
If your house was built after 1992 and prior to the year 2000, only one safety switch on the power point circuits was required. After 2000 to June 2018 only two safety switches were required, one on the power point circuit and one on the lighting circuit. If your house was built after approximately June 2018, the requirement was safety switches on all circuits. If you buy a new home in Queensland the requirement is still only one safety switch on the power point circuit only. When will enough be enough, let's fight for our community's electrical safety. Together we can make the difference and Stop the Electric Silent Killer.
